The trees were first planted by settlers in Oregon during 1800’s creating orchards, a source for food. Over the past two hundred years they have cross-pollinated. Now walnut from Oregon even though it is labeled as Oregon Black Walnut is typically a hybrid. This desk has heavy patterns of claro walnut with unique patterns and spalting that reflects a marbled presentation with swirling brown and black streaks. The desk top is Oregon Black Walnut from an area south of Portland. The legs are walnut are constructed of walnut from Iowa. It is the traditional patterning of walnut from the upper Midwest and Eastern U.S.
The finish contains five coats of hand-rubbed Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood. To maintain the beauty of the Oregon Black Walnut/Claro Walnut avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel.
