Walnut Burl, Juglans hindsi, is found in Northern California and Oregon. A variation is also found in the eastern United States. The most common source is from orchards but also from walnut that has been used for ornamental purposes. The wood is marbled with violet, brown and black streaks swirling around burl “eyes”. Most burls grow under the ground attaching to the roots of the tree. They are not typically not found until the tree dies or falls over. This burl is from Oregon and is a result of the cross pollination of claro and black walnut.

The stone is green serpentine (serpentinus) means serpent rock. It contains magnesium iron phyllosilicate along with nickel and cobalt. Serpentine can be green or brown. This serpentine is from Washington State. Copper is the inlay. It is typically found in multiple states in the U.S. including Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan and New Mexico. Copper is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color that accents the Walnut Burl.  

The finish contains three coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood. The legs are from custom metal from Frank Seckler in Taos, NM. To maintain the beauty of the Walnut Burl avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel.
