Hawaiian olive wood (Nestegis sandwicensis) is also known by Olopua, Pua and Ulupu found in Hawaiian Islands and is part of the Oleaceae (olive) family. The tree Is usually thirty to fifty feet high. The heartwood is yellowish brown to a light red with streaks of black. It is an extremely hard wood with tight grain and is valued for its color, patterns and durability.
Malachite is a mineral composed of green copper carbonate hydroxide. It forms at shallow depths in the “oxidizing zone” forming most often within limestone. Chyrsocolla is a hydrated phyllosilicate mineral. It comes from Greek chrysos meaning ‘gold’ and kola ‘glue’ although its color is typically a combination of blue and green. The finish contains five coats of tung oil that create beautiful natural finish. The olive was sanded after each coat. To maintain the beauty of the Hawaiian olive avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel.
