Ambrosia Maple “Acer” gets its name from the ambrosia beetle which bores into the wood bring the fungi which creates the stains and discoloration of the wood. The discolor develops around the boring paths of the beetles. Ambrosia maple is considered a soft maple with a brownish cream-colored background with brown to greyish-blue streaks. Ambrosia maple is found primarily in the US, Canada, and parts of Europe.
The blue inlay is “Lapis Iazuli” which is Latin for “stone sky”. It is commonly referred to as simply lapis, a metamorphic that is bright blue. The primary source of lapis is Afghanistan, but it is also mined in Russia, Peru, Italy, Canada, and The U.S. This lapis is from Afghanistan.
The finish contains three coats of tung oil that create a beautiful natural finish. The ambrosia maple was sanded after each coat. To maintain the beauty of the ambrosia maple avoid using cleaning solutions instead using water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. For polishing a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
