Buckeye Burl also known as Aesculus californica is native to California and southern Oregon. It has swirling grain patterns with a mixture of blue, grey, black and gold which blend in a beautiful color contrast. Buckeye Burl is one of the lightest and softest woods. A burl is created when a tree encounters stress which may be from a virus, fungus or an injury. Most burls grow under the ground attaching to the roots of the tree. They are not typically found until the tree dies or falls over.

The stone inlay consists of Blue Lace Agate, Malachite and agate. The inlay is Chrysocolla, brass and malachite powder. Malachite is a bright green mineral with copper hydroxyl carbonite. It typically comes from weathered copper ore. Malachite is found in the Southwestern US especially in Arizona. Jasper which means “speckled stone” and is an aggregate of quartz, chalcedony and various minerals. Blue lace agate is a variety of quartz. It has light blue banded layers that can include bright blue, white, brown and black. Agates form as nodules or geodes in igneous rocks when there is a hole inside. Molecules begin to crystallize forming bands of agate. Color and patterns depend on pressure, temperature and the mineral content. Agate is found in Namibia, Brazil, China, India and the United States. This agate is from Washington state. Chyrsocolla, the inlay, is a hydrated phyllosilicate mineral. It comes from Greek chrysos meaning ‘gold’ and kola ‘glue’ although its color is typically a combination of blue and green. Chyrsocolla is found in the United States in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico. Michigan, Pennsylvania and Idaho. The Chyrsocolla is from Arizona. Brass and malachite power were also used as part of the inlay.

The finish contains five coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood.
