Guanacaste often called the “elephant-ear tree) is typically found in Central America but also grows in northern South America to Brazil and southern Mexico.

The tree can grow to 115 feet tall with the trunk up to 12 feet across. The heartwood is light and medium brown often with a red hue. Sapwood is a pale yellow. The bark is light gray with reddish-brown fissures. The grain is interlocked and has a somewhat natural luster.
