Sissoo is known as North Indian Rosewood or Dalbergia sissoo. It is native to the India and parts of Southeast Asia, and some areas of Afghanistan and southern Iran. It has long, leathery leaves and whitish or pink flowers and a fast-growing, invasive tree. It can grow as tall as eighty-two feet and up to nine feet in diameter but is usually smaller. The wood is spectacular with variation in colors. The heartwood ranges from golds and auburns to deep and dark browns. The sapwood ranges from an off white to a pale brown with an array of variations. This tree, as many non-native species, was urban logged in Phoenix. The inlay is copper from Arizona. Copper is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color that accents the Sissoo.
The finish contains five coats of Tung oil; carefully sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the sissoo. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking, and movement. To maintain the beauty of the sissoo avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. For polishing a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
